The River Access Hole draws a different crowd: those who come for the rock formations jutting above the waterline and the deep, inviting center of the river where braver visitors can jump.

What Swimming Is Like

The South Branch runs clear over a rocky riverbed, giving the water a greenish tint in deeper pools and a crystalline sparkle in the riffles. Expect cool to cold temperatures even in midsummer — this is mountain water, fed by springs and shaded stretches of river corridor. At Welton Park, the shallow areas warm up enough by July for comfortable wading, and the crawdad-catching here is genuinely excellent; lift any flat rock along the bank and you're likely to send a few scrambling. The River Access Hole rewards those willing to explore a bit: rock formations create natural platforms for jumping, and the deep center pool offers the kind of full-body plunge that cuts through even the most oppressive August heat. Neither location has designated lifeguards or safety staff on site, so swimming is entirely at your own judgment and comfort level.

Both locations are reachable by car, though the River Access Hole involves some careful navigation due to limited signage — local knowledge helps. The best window for swimming runs from late spring through early fall, with summer bringing the warmest water and early October delivering spectacular foliage along the ridges above the river. Admission to both spots is free. If you're making a weekend of it, the National Forest campgrounds at Big Bend and Seneca Shadows offer excellent overnight options — Big Bend in particular sits right on the river and is a swimming destination in its own right. The small city of Petersburg serves as the regional hub, with basic services and supplies, and the communities of Cabins and Welton are just a short drive away. Come with river shoes, a cooler, and no particular agenda — the South Branch rewards those who slow down.
