Swimming Holes

Connecting outdoor enthusiasts with America's most beautiful hidden swimming destinations

What This Directory Is

Hidden Swimming Holes is an independent research directory cataloguing natural freshwater swimming destinations across all 50 US states. Every entry covers a specific river, creek, lake, spring, or waterfall with detailed access directions, facilities information, safety notes, and nearby points of interest.

The current database covers 833 verified locations — from family-friendly state park swimming areas to remote backcountry pools on public land. Each entry is built from a combination of official land management data, geographic research, and community-contributed local knowledge.

We focus on practical accuracy over marketing language. That means being upfront when a site is unofficial, when fees are unverified, or when conditions are seasonal. Our goal is to give you enough information to decide whether a place is right for your trip — not to oversell it.

How We Research Locations

Each location in the directory is assembled from multiple data sources: official state and federal land management records, USGS geographic data, historic recreation guides, and community knowledge from local outdoor forums and regional hiking communities. GPS coordinates are cross-referenced against satellite imagery and official park maps before being published.

Access information — trailheads, parking, road conditions, fees — is sourced from the land management agency responsible for each site wherever possible. For unofficial or informal sites, we note that status clearly and encourage visitors to check current conditions before heading out.

Safety information follows guidance from the American Red Cross, CDC recreational water guidelines, and USGS streamflow data. We do not assert that a site has lifeguard coverage or formal safety infrastructure unless that is confirmed.

Joshua Havens

Founder & Editor, Hidden Swimming Holes

Joshua Havens built Hidden Swimming Holes to fill a gap he kept running into: online lists of "best swimming holes" that were long on hype and short on the practical details that actually matter — current access rules, fee information, water type, nearby towns, and honest caveats about what's unknown.

Every entry in the directory is assembled from official land management records, USGS geographic data, and community knowledge. Joshua reviews and edits all published content, with a focus on accuracy over promotion. Questions about specific entries or corrections can be sent via the contact page.

What We Don't Claim

Natural swimming holes change. Water levels fluctuate with seasons and rainfall. Access roads wash out. Sites occasionally close due to safety concerns, conservation needs, or changes in land ownership. Always verify current conditions before visiting — check with the managing agency, local ranger station, or a recent trip report.

We don't guarantee water quality at any listed site. Natural bodies of water can be affected by agricultural runoff, algal blooms, and bacterial contamination that varies week to week. Check your state's environmental agency for current swim advisories before swimming in any natural water.

If you find outdated or incorrect information, please contact us. Corrections are prioritized and applied promptly.
