Swimming Near Syracuse: Beaches, Creek Pools and Waterfall Visits

A good Syracuse swimming day starts with a named entrance and an operator's actual opening notice. Central New York offers managed lake beaches and Fillmore Glen's stream-fed swimming area, but a waterfall photograph or a wildlife-area trail is not a bathing permit. Choose the swimming facility first, then add a separate gorge walk or shoreline visit.

Choose the kind of day you want

For a designated creek-fed swim, look at Fillmore Glen State Park. For a managed lake beach, check Green Lakes State Park or the town waterfront at Skaneateles (Swimming temporarily closed). For Lake Ontario, Southwick Beach State Park is a specifically operated beach, not permission to swim throughout adjacent Lakeview Wma. All require a fresh seasonal and daily check.

Fillmore Glen: a designated swim, not every waterfall pool

The park at 1686 State Route 38 in Moravia confirms a stream-fed swimming area. Its displayed 2026 swim season ran June 20 through September 7, with weather-dependent daily hours. That period has ended; call 315-497-0130 for the next operating schedule.

Green Lakes: check the beach banner before leaving

Green Lakes State Park at 7900 Green Lakes Road, Fayetteville, confirms a managed swimming beach. Its current page marks beach/swimming closed for the season. The park's trails and other operating activities do not reopen the beach.

The park also prohibits outside/private watercraft on Green and Round Lakes. A kayak or a quiet-looking shoreline is not a workaround for a closed designated swim area. Read Green Lakes' current facility notices.

Skaneateles: a town-controlled waterfront

The town's Clift Park waterfront is explicitly closed for the 2026 season. When it operates, swimming requires a lifeguard, stays inside buoy lines and has swim-test and child-supervision rules. The town prohibits using this area to start an open-water swim.

Southwick and Lakeview: neighboring land, different rules

Southwick Beach State Park is an operated Lake Ontario swimming destination. Its published 2026 swim season ended September 6. The park warns that staffing or water-quality problems can prohibit swimming even during an advertised season.

Lakeview WMA is a separate wildlife-management landscape. Follow its mapped trails and habitat restrictions; DEC's applicable WMA regulations prohibit swimming. Waterfall trips that are not substitute swims

Salmon River Falls is a sightseeing destination. DEC prohibits public access in the restricted cliff-face, plunge-pool and falling-rock area, including swimming and wading in the pool. Rattlesnake Gulf has an old approach through Adams Eden Camp. Historical town and geological records do not establish current owner permission, operating admission or a maintained bathing descent. Do not follow that old private-property route without authorization, and do not treat the USGS monitoring location as a public trailhead.

Check an operator's live beach notice, water-quality result, parking rules and permitted equipment on the day you travel. Estimate your journey to the exact entrance with a current route planner; this guide does not promise a fixed drive time or water temperature.
